What Is the Difference Between Cold Foiling and Traditional Hot Foiling?

What Is the Difference Between Cold Foiling and Traditional Hot Foiling?

Traditional hot foiling typically uses a heated stamping die to transfer the metallic foil onto the substrate through the combined action of heat and pressure. Cold foiling, by contrast, typically uses a specialized adhesive and printing equipment to achieve foil transfer without the high-temperature stamping die required for conventional hot foiling.

Cold foiling can be integrated into certain printing workflows, making it suitable for labels that require high production efficiency or complex metallic graphics. Hot foiling, meanwhile, offers its own advantages in metallic appearance, localized detail, and compatibility with different materials.

When selecting a process, consider the label design, substrate surface, production speed, equipment configuration, and cost. Both processes require careful control of image registration and substrate compatibility. It is therefore inaccurate to assume that cold foiling is always faster or that hot foiling always produces better results.
