Current status of digital printing machine development
May 28, 2025
Based on the source of technology, the existing digital printing equipment on the market can be roughly divided into the following four categories:
1. Digital printing all-in-one machine - developed from the copier technology plus digital technology
This type of equipment is developed on the basis of traditional copiers and the integration of digital technology. Its biggest feature is the integration of digital input and output functions of graphic information.
(1) Structural composition and functional characteristics:
Digital printing all-in-one machines usually include the following three core parts:
Scanning part: responsible for the digital input of images, supports black and white and color scanning, and can directly obtain the content of paper originals.
Laser printing part: digitally controls laser imaging to achieve high-precision and high-quality graphic output.
Post-processing part (folding, binding, etc.): supports automatic folding, binding, paging, punching and other functions to meet the needs of rapid document delivery.
This type of equipment supports functions such as scanning, copying, printing, and electronic document publishing. It is a typical "digital input + digital output" system, breaking through the limitations of previous single output devices.
(2) Advantages and development prospects:
Flexible and diverse output speed: from 20 pages per minute to more than 100 pages per minute, meeting the production capacity needs of different users.
High quality stability: digital technology ensures image consistency and color reproduction, especially suitable for corporate users who need frequent output.
Easy to operate, environmentally friendly and clean: humanized interface design and fully enclosed operation process reduce the operating threshold and office environment pollution.
Relatively low system cost: it has a strong cost-effective advantage in the field of medium and low print volume demand, which is easy to promote and popularize.
Strong adaptability and wide market: education, government, enterprises, institutions, printing shops, etc. have wide demand for it.
With the advancement of the trend of intelligent and networked office, this type of equipment will pay more attention to the integration of cloud printing, remote management and intelligent maintenance functions in the future, and the market prospects are broad.
2. Digital multifunction all-in-one machine - developed based on printer technology
This type of equipment is mainly upgraded from traditional desktop printers, compatible with copying, scanning, printing and other functions, and is usually also called "office-type multifunction all-in-one machine".
Technical characteristics and market positioning:
Similar principles but limited performance: Although its functional configuration is similar to that of the first type of equipment, most manufacturers lack the independent research and development capabilities of high-speed printing cores (especially laser engines), which limits its output speed, often below 30 pages per minute.
Different target markets: This type of equipment is mostly aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises, home offices or individual user markets, with low prices and compact structures, suitable for lightweight printing needs.
Difficult to enter the professional printing market: Due to speed and stability limitations, it is not enough to support the commercial printing needs of high efficiency, high quality and long-term continuous operation, and it is also difficult to undertake complex post-processing tasks.
Despite this, in the cost-sensitive market and light office field, multi-function all-in-one machines still have a stable market demand, especially in faxing, scanning and archiving.
3. Digital printing machine - developed from printing machine technology, digital technology and electronic ink technology
This type of equipment usually refers to digital printing machines with **electronic ink (ElectroInk)** as the core imaging technology, such as the HP Indigo series, which represents the development direction of high-end commercial digital printing.
Technical features:
Electronic ink imaging principle: Combining the imaging logic and digital control technology of traditional offset printing, the output image is rich in layers and has a strong texture, which is suitable for high-end graphic output.
Graphic quality is comparable to offset printing: color control is precise, especially suitable for high-demand commercial printing applications such as books, brochures, samples, packaging, etc.
Flexible printing, on-demand publishing: support short-run printing and personalized customization to adapt to rapidly changing market needs.
Relatively high cost: equipment procurement and maintenance costs are high, mainly serving professional printing companies and digital printing service providers.
4. Digital printing machine - developed from printing machine technology plus digital technology and on-machine direct platemaking technology
This type of equipment is based on the structure of traditional offset printing machines and integrates digital direct platemaking (Direct Imaging, DI) technology. It is a product of the transition from analog printing to digital printing.
Core technology and advantages:
On-machine platemaking: no platemaking output and plate exposure process are required, the platemaking process is automatically completed inside the printing machine, which improves production efficiency and saves manpower.
Fast printing speed and good stability: It adopts traditional printing methods, but the front-end digital control ensures content updates and quality consistency.
Suitable for the short and medium-run printing market: Compared with pure offset printing equipment, it is more suitable for fast-response custom printing business.
Transitional products: It has been widely used in some printing plants in recent years, but with the maturity of pure digital inkjet or electronic ink technology, the market share has gradually shrunk.
